Tennessee Open Records Information Services (TORIS) background check is available to the public. It is a name-based check only for the State of Tennessee. Anyone can request a criminal history check for a fee of $29.00 providing they can supply the name, date of birth, race and sex of the individual being searched. A current address and social security number are optional, however, including these will increase the accuracy of the name-based search. When a criminal history check on an individual is requested, the results will state whether or not that individual has a criminal history. If there is a record that may be for the individual search, a copy of the criminal history will be forwarded to you. If no possible record is found, your request will be returned stating “The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation found NO Tennessee criminal history base on the information provided.”
Please be aware that, unless a fingerprint comparison is performed, it is impossible for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to be sure the record belongs to the individual you requested. The information you receive will be based only on those records resulting from an arrest which occurred within the state of Tennessee. The accuracy of the information you provide is critical as all searches are conducted based on the information provided. A fingerprint comparison will only be performed as the result of an appeal based on the information received from an initial criminal history request.
There are two way to request a Tennessee Criminal History background check through TORIS. Note: If the background check you are requesting is for adoption, immigration or purposes that need notarizing, please submit the application via mail or fax as the background check must be returned via mail.
