Background Checks
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is the central repository for criminal history information for the state of Tennessee. In addition to maintaining criminal history information, TBI is also responsible for providing the public access to this information. Criminal history information in the state of Tennessee is comprised of misdemeanor and felony arrests based solely on fingerprint submission by the arresting agencies.
There are two types of background checks through the TBI. Please make sure you are selecting the appropriate criminal history background check, as we are unable to provide refunds.
- If you are required as an applicant to have a fingerprint based background check as a condition of employment, please look under Tennessee Applicant Processing Services (TAPS).
- Tennessee Open Records Information Services (TORIS) background check is available to the public. It is a name-based check only for the State of Tennessee. Anyone can request a criminal history check for a fee of $29.00.
